Prepare yourself to say, “Okay, boomer”!
In, I don’t know, 1970(?), 71(?), I was 12 or 13 years old.
I told my mom that I wanted a Schwinn Super Sport, racing bike, (state of the art, 22lb, ten-speed bicycle). If I couldn’t have it, I didn’t want anything!!!
It cost $360. (a new, v-8 Mustang was four or five thousand).
When Christmas morning came, I had a package of socks and an orange and a banana in my stocking.
After I calmed down, she told me that if I got a paper route, and did some baby-sitting, and saved up half the money, she would match it…I did, and she did. It took a little over six months.
We were upper-middle-class. She was a widow, a single mom. She could have bought the bike. She bought my older sisters new cars when they turned 16. She did the same for me, when my time came.
I know that your kids are much younger, but I often think of the lesson my mother taught me, when I remember just buying my daughter whatever she wanted.
I screwed up, royally!
Obviously I can’t tell anyone how to raise their children, just food for thought.
BTW, I know, from experience, what an incredible job you are doing right now. It sounds like you are going to be great at being a good mom. I’m proud of you!
