My neighbor, Willie, and I sometimes chuckle at the sight of the world going to hell.
We're both in our sixties, veterans dependent on a VA pension and social security.
We're not going to starve or be hungry any time soon, but we'll never be wealthy, either.
We chuckle, shaking our heads in unison, at the state of politics and the world in general.
Having lived a long time and survived in very severe circumstances, we're both more than a bit fatalistic about all areas of life.
Having very nearly died more times than either of us can remember, we're both quite comfortable with the knowledge that it can come at any moment, from either heart attack or stroke, or some stupid kid with a pistol.
I have osteoporosis and could fall and break a hip in the shower. Unable to get to a phone, I could bleed out inside my pelvic area.
Things like that, and other 'catastrophes', are simply stuff that happens.
Stuff happens. People do things.
So far, in human history, when the poop hit the fan, lots of people screamed, "the sky is falling!".
It may well have fallen for a number of people, hundreds, thousands, millions even.
So far the human race has managed to survive.
I expect that it will continue to do so. It will be without me, or you, or anyone alive today, but it will go on, in some form.
When I saw that life, and other people, continue without me, thrive without me, do all kinds of stupid, crazy, stuff, regardless of my actions or inactions, I decided to stop investing a lot of emotion in it.
These days I invest my loving kindness and compassionate understanding in those people immediately around me. Some of them do the same for me.
That's what is important in life. It's the only really important thing, gentle, loving kindness and compassionate understanding, being of benefit to others, and if you're lucky, they to you.
There is no more lofty goal.
That's it. Plain and simple.
Ignoring the distractions takes practice, but it's more than worth the effort.
