I’m okay in a sec 8 apartment, but I don’t have children, or even a spouse. I did have a couple of careers, until SSDI pronounced me “totally and permanently disabled”, in the 90s.
I see, nearly every day, that I am the “privileged” sort of sec8 dweller. My checks, both SSDI and VA, probably total at least twice as much as anyone else out here.
Being a homeless veteran,(for a few months, spent in a fairly nice shelter), I bypassed the waiting list for a voucher.
Oh! And I’m white, too!
I get the feeling that many of my more privileged friends assume that everyone here “should” be like me. They don’t understand the systemic disadvantages that my neighbors are weighed down by.
I get along fine with everyone. I suppose it helps that my daughter is of blended ethnicity, and I don’t look down on anyone.

PS: it’s been a good year at Pecan Grove. No one was shot, in the entirety of 2019!
