“Where do you think all the toxicity in society is coming from these days?”

My answer;

Fear and confusion because of uncertainty. The fight-or-flight reaction that results causes all kinds of trouble.

If everyone worked together to solve the problems that cause the fear, treating each other with loving kindness and compassionate understanding, the fear would disappear. The loving kindness would intensify and the tiny differences would fade into insignificance.

The people who hold power intentionally stir up fear of “the other”, pointing out and blaming those tiny differences. As long as we are fighting each other, the powerful stay in power.

It's a vicious cycle, intentionally perpetuated by those in power.
